When you click Gantt in i-lign, the Gantt chart should appear. If you cannot see the i-lign Gantt chart, use this table to troubleshoot the reason.

Errors or messages Solutions
"Access Denied. You do not have the appropriate security permissions to perform this action" If this message appears, it means you need more access rights before you can view the Gantt chart. You won't be able to view the Gantt chart until your i-lign security permission is changed. This is more likely if you are working outside the organisation. Ask the project's manager and/or your i-lign Administrator to increase your security permissions so you can view (and possibly edit) the gantt chart.

  • Permissions for the project Gantt are set in Project security, (Gantt: View)and
  • Permissions for team, portfolio, strategy and goal Gantt are set in Organisation security. (eg, Portfolio: Project Gantt Chart)
"Trust content from i-lign Limited" If a dialogue box appears asking you to trust content from i-lign Limited, click 'Yes'. The Gantt chart should appear. This message is only for first-time viewing and will not appear again.
A red 'X' in the top left corner. If you see a red 'X' in the top left corner, the Sun Java Runtime Environment applet may not be configured correctly. See http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000040200.xml for some useful advice from Sun on this.
"Install/download the Sun Java plugin." If a message appears asking you to install the Sun Java plugin, or download the Sun Java plugin (the message will vary depending on your browser), it means you don't have the required software installed on your computer. i-lign's gantt chart requires the Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE). See Technical requirements for your computer for a link to download the free software.
"i-lign gantt applet not initiated"

If a message appears in your browser's status bar "i-lign gantt applet not initiated", it could mean that you need to re-install JRE, or that your computer's Java cache needs clearing.

See next item below.

Gantt doesn't appear, but you don't see any of the above error messages.

First, test if JRE is installed correctly and running properly on your computer. Go to this page on the Sun website: http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/1.5.0/demos/plugin/applets/MoleculeViewer/example1.html

Alternatively, download the .zip file that is displayed at the bottom of this page. This will provide the molecule test independently of any potential internet connection/proxy server issue.

  1. Unzip the files in the attached file "MoleculeViewer.zip" on to your hard drive.
  2. Using Windows Explorer or My Computer, navigate to the MoleculeViewer folder that was created.
  3. Open the MoleculeViewer folder.
  4. Double click on "example1.html".
  5. If Internet Explorer complains that the content is unsafe, follow these additional steps:
  6. Click ok to close the warning dialog.
  7. Click on the security bar "To help protect your security…" that appears underneath the address bar.
  8. Choose "Allow Blocked Content".
  9. Choose Yes.

You should see a picture of a molecule that can be rotated with your mouse, which indicates that JRE is installed and running properly. If you cannot rotate the molecule with your mouse, it indicates that JRE is not running properly.

If JRE is not running properly:

  1. Reinstall JRE. See Technical requirements for your computer for a link to download the free software.

If JRE is installed and running properly, but you still can't see the Gantt chart:

  1. You may have downloaded an incomplete Gantt chart applet or be running an out of date version after a recent i-lign upgrade. To download a new one you will need to clear your computer's java cache. See How to clear your java cache. Then test if the gantt chart is working properly. If not, go to step 2:
  2. Open your java console and see if it contains an error message. To open your java console in Microsoft Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Sun Java Console. Copy the whole error message and send it in an email to support [at] ilign.com.
  3. Strict security controls on your computer might be a reason you can't see the gantt chart. If these are possibilities then try changing them and see if they make a difference:
    • the i-lign server may need to be a trusted site in Internet Explorer. You might need admin rights to your computer to set that, or it might be set at a global level within your organisation.
    • something may be preventing the gantt applet from communicating with the i-lign server, like a firewall running on your computer. For hosted versions, the gantt applet needs to be able to connect to the i-lign server using https in order to work.

If none of the above lets you see i-lign's gantt chart, please post details of your problem on i-lign Knowledge's Support forum, or contact your i-lign Administrator.

Note: Customers running an i-lign version prior to 2.x.20 should download JRE 1.5.0_05 as these versions will not work with 1.5.0_06 or above.

There is a bug in the i-lign 2.8.x / PlanWise 2.7.x code streams that occurs when versions prior to 2.8.20 / 2.7.20 are run with the Sun JRE version 1.5.0_06 or above.

The bug is that the gantt chart applet will fail to load for a project when there are exceptions (ie holidays) in the project's base calendar. Customers running these versions of i-lign / PlanWise and wanting to install Java 5 on the desktop have three options:

  • use the Sun JRE version 1.5.0_05 or earlier
  • upgrade to the latest versions of the 2.8.x / 2.7.x code streams, where the bug has been fixed and all updates to Java 5 are supported
  • upgrade to i-lign 3.1, which similarly supports all Java 5 updates
