The export will output the i-lign schedule data (tasks, milestones, constraints, and resource allocations) in an .xml format that can be read by MS Project 2002 and above.
In i-lign, you can both import from and export to Microsoft Project. Exporting to Microsoft Project outputs the i-lign schedule data (tasks, milestones, constraints, and resource allocations) in an .xml format that can be read by Microsoft Project 2002 and above. Microsoft Project can then be used to distribute project schedule information to people who do not have i-lign access or to perform analysis such as critical path analysis / what if analysis.
Export to MS Project:
- In i-lign, navigate to the Project Snapshot of the project that you wish to export to Microsoft Project.
- On the project menu (left menu) select Microsoft Project / Export and then click the Export button. i-lign will generate a .xml file of the i-lign project schedule data.
- In Microsoft Project select File > Open
- In the Microsoft Project Open dialogue box select XML Format in the Files of Type field.
- Browse for the appropriate .xml file and click Open.
Notes:
- The output file generated is in a .xml format, and Microsoft Project 2002 and above will be necessary to read this file
- i-lign calendar data will be included in the .xml output file and for i-lign versions 2.7.22 / 2.8.22 and above this calendar information will load accurately into Microsoft Project.
- The .xml output file generated from i-lign cannot be directly loaded back into i-lign through the MS Project import facility - it must be opened in Microsoft Project and saved as a .xml file again before i-lign will accept it for importing. Refer to Importing XML file problems.
- Reference numbers to the i-lign tasks and milestones are included within the output file, so that if the file is cycled through Microsoft Project and re-imported into i-lign, the original i-lign tasks and milestones can be matched with any updates and changes. Note that there are constraints with updating schedule data in both i-lign and Microsoft Project as outlined in the topic MS Project importing and exporting in active projects.
- Task pool information recorded in the i-lign Gantt will not export to Microsoft Project, because Microsoft Project does not support i-lign task pools.
- Non-schedule project data (such as risks, issues, change requests, decisions, resource categories and so forth) will not be included in the output file.
